HSE Celebrates 50 Years of Workplace Safety
Celebrating 50 Years of the Health and Safety Executive
As of 1 January 2025, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has officially marked 50 years since its inception. Established by the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, HSE began operations on 1 January 1975 and has since been a cornerstone of workplace safety across Great Britain.
In collaboration with local authorities, HSE has played a pivotal role in reducing workplace fatalities and injuries, transforming Great Britain into one of the safest countries in the world to work. Back in 1974, there were 651 workplace fatalities. Fast forward to the latest annual statistics (2023-2024), that number has dropped significantly to 138, this is a testament to the organisation’s tireless efforts over the past five decades.
What Does This Mean for Enviro-Safe?
For businesses like Enviro-Safe, HSE’s commitment to improving workplace safety reinforces the importance of adherence to rigorous safety standards. As a licensed asbestos removal contractor, we align our work with HSE’s guidance and campaigns to minimise risks to our team and clients.
The anniversary is a reminder to stay proactive in ensuring safety in all aspects of our operations. Asbestos remains a major concern in older buildings, and HSE’s ongoing campaigns, such as the "Asbestos and You" initiative, provide critical resources for contractors and homeowners alike.
The Importance of Safe Home Improvements
HSE’s eBulletin also highlighted the importance of assessing asbestos risks during home improvement projects. At Enviro-Safe, we echo this advice:
- Before Work Begins: Tradespeople must evaluate the likelihood of asbestos being present or disturbed.
- Action Plans: Clear steps should be in place in case asbestos is discovered during work.
By incorporating HSE resources, such as the Asbestos Essentials tasksheets and the TrustMark app, we ensure our clients and contractors have the tools they need to plan and work safely.
Recognition of Leadership
HSE’s Chief Executive, Sarah Albon, was awarded a Companion of the Order of Bath in the New Year’s Honours List for her outstanding contributions to the public sector. Since joining HSE in 2019, Sarah has led the organisation through significant challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, further solidifying HSE’s reputation as a global leader in workplace safety.
A Shared Commitment to Safety
As we celebrate HSE’s 50th anniversary, Enviro-Safe remains dedicated to supporting their mission. Through continuous learning and collaboration, we aim to uphold the high safety standards that have been the hallmark of the past 50 years.
